There's a parent at my kids' swim meets I've talked to probably a dozen times. (And yes, this is actually the pool we were at.)

Well, me and this dad, we've covered the meaning of life, the history of his country, raising teenagers, and what kind of world we're handing our children. Deep, meaningful conversations. The kind you don't always get to have.

And every time we talk I think to myself - I don't know his name.🫣

I'd been baring my whole self to this person — my worries, my opinions, my half-formed thoughts about the future — and I didn't even know what to call him (but I know his kids' names!) And he knew my name. He said it several times as we spoke. Then I really felt like a moron for not knowing his.🤦‍♀️

As I think about my conversations with him, and the absolute depth of our connection, it reminded me of something.

Us. Me and you. This is exactly how we are.

You know my name. But oftentimes I don't know yours. You may have found my book here or somewhere else. And I bare my soul as I write. I'm showing you my deepest imaginations — some of it dark, some of it gory, some of it blissful and romantic and soft — and you learn who I am through it. We create deep connections over characters who are part of me and somehow connect with a part of you.

The connection is real. Even when I don't know your name.

I can't make this stuff up. I hit go, walked away from my computer to grab water, and by the time I came back — funded. I had to read the screen three times before I believed it.
